Why Grind a Tree Stump?

Not every stump needs to go.

If you have one sitting out in the woods where nobody sees it or walks near it, leaving it alone might be perfectly fine.

Put that same stump in the front yard and it gets annoying pretty quickly.

You have to mow around it. It takes up usable space. Maybe it is right where you want to put grass or make changes to the yard.

Sometimes you just don't like looking at it.

That's reason enough too.

You already had the tree removed. Grinding the stump finishes the job.

How Does Stump Grinding Work?

A stump grinder uses a cutting wheel to grind the wood into much smaller pieces.

We're not pulling the entire stump out of the ground. Instead, the machine works through the wood and takes the stump down below the surrounding surface.

What you are left with is ground-up wood instead of a solid stump.

How far down we grind depends partly on the stump and what you plan on doing with that spot afterward.

Stump Grinding Is Not the Same as Pulling a Stump Out

This gets confused pretty often.

Grinding a stump does not mean digging out every piece of the stump and its roots.

That would be stump removal, which involves pulling or excavating much more of the tree's root system. It also means disturbing a lot more ground.

Grinding is different.

We take the stump down below ground level while much of the root system stays where it is.

If your main goal is getting an old stump out of the way, you usually don't need to dig up half the yard to do it.

What Happens to the Roots?

They stay underground.

A tree's roots can extend quite a distance from the stump, so grinding the center does not make all of them disappear.

Over time, those remaining roots will decay naturally.

This matters if you have bigger plans for that part of the property.

What matters more is the stump itself and whether we can get our equipment to it.

Waiting for it to rot away on its own could take years.

What Is Left Behind?

A lot of people don't realize how much wood is actually in a stump until it gets ground up.

A bigger stump can produce quite a bit of material.

The grinder turns that solid wood into smaller chips and ground-up debris. It doesn't make the wood disappear.

What is left will depend on the size of the stump and the job itself.

Can You Grind a Stump Next to a House or Fence?

Maybe.

Stumps don't always end up conveniently sitting in the middle of a wide-open lawn.

We find them beside houses and tucked near fences. Sometimes there isn't much room between the stump and whatever is around it.

We have to be able to safely get the equipment into the area and work around those obstacles.

Buried utilities can matter as well.

This is why location is such a big part of stump grinding. Two stumps of the same size can be very different jobs depending on where they are sitting.

If you're already having us remove a tree, decide whether you want the stump to stay before the job is finished.

You don't have to grind it.

Some people don't care.

What Can I Do With the Area Afterward?

For a lot of homeowners, the goal is simple.

They want their yard back.

Grinding gets the stump below the surface so you aren't driving the mower around a chunk of wood every week.

You may want grass there eventually. Maybe you just want the obstacle gone.

Keep in mind that the old root system is still underground. The soil can also settle as the remaining wood breaks down.

How much does stump grinding cost?

There isn't one price for every stump. Size matters and so does where the stump is located. A stump we can easily reach is a different job from one squeezed into a difficult spot. If you have several stumps, we can look at all of them while we're there and give you an estimate.

How far below the ground do you grind a stump?

It depends on the stump and what you want to do with the area afterward. Tell us what your plans are and we can talk about how the stump should be handled.

Does stump grinding remove all of the roots?

No. Grinding takes care of the main stump below ground level. Much of the root system stays underground and will break down naturally over time.

Can you grind a stump next to my house?

Possibly. We need enough room to get the equipment to the stump and safely work around the house. Send us a picture or have us take a look at it first.

Can you grind multiple stumps at once?

Yes. If you have several stumps, show us all of them. We can look at them as part of the same job.

Should I grind the stump when I have a tree removed?

That's up to you. If the stump is somewhere you don't care about, you may decide to leave it. If it's going to be sitting in the middle of your lawn and you already know you'll want it gone, it makes sense to talk about grinding while we're handling the tree removal.
